What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a therapy that is evidence based and was a therapy originally designed to help individuals recover from traumatic experiences.
When we experience trauma our brains may store memories in different parts of the brain. This then means these memories can be activated or triggered in day to day life. When this happens individuals may experience flashbacks, severe anxiety or have a dramatic affect on mood. If you experience these symptoms it could be due to unprocessed trauma which is having an impact on your daily living.
EMDR helps to identity the traumatic memory, feeling or sensation and reprocess this. This allows the individual to have the memory in mind but desensitize the anxiety attached to it, therefore getting rid of the triggering feelings in daily life events.
What else is EMDR used for?
EMDR is not only used for Post Traumatic Stress it is used to help with:
Anxiety
Phobias
